Reveal: Boho Farmhouse Master Bathroom Remodel

boho meets farmhouse master bathroom reveal

It may sound odd to admit, but I think I could totally stay locked away in my new master bathroom for hours on end.

After five full years of wishing, dreaming and scheming – I finally have the spa-like retreat that everyone woman deserves.

While I never thought the day would come, I am totally elated to share the reveal of my 1980’s bathroom with you today.

So before I get to the pretty pics, I thought I would give you guys a little refresher of what I was working with (and for those of you who missed the original design plan post, click here)…
master bathroom before our remodel

As you can see from the “before” photo above, this 1980’s bathroom was basically the antithesis of my style. With no source of natural light and a tiny shower, this space was more of a cave than a true master en-suite. In fact, the lackluster bathrooms in our house was something that always perplexed me about my fixer upper.

While all of the main living areas are relatively spacious and open-concept (with ample natural light), it seems as though the bathing spaces were nothing more than an afterthought…and I was initially ok with that as I wanted our home to be more about family and entertaining above all else . One doesn’t typically throw parties in a bathroom (or maybe I am just not that freaky).

Essentially, I ignored this space until the design fanatic in me could no longer stand it.

Aside from our pool excavation and re-installation fiasco, this master bathroom remodel has been one of our biggest remodels to date.

While we did decide to keep the existing footprint of this space, the demolition of the wall between the bath and shower (in addition to a window install) dramatically changed the appearance of our bathroom.

To further utilize what limited space we had to work with (our bathroom dimensions are only 12′ long x 8′ deep), we decided to demolish the original skirt of the Jacuzzi tub as the built-in step majorly cramped the traffic flow. (In this post, I show you how we redesigned the skirt of the tub for under $25. Click here for that tutorial.)

As for the aesthetics of the space, I wanted something that could stand the test of time (in case we ever decide to sell this place), while also representing my signature, Boho meets Modern Farmhouse style.

While we installed the floating vanity, shiplap accent wall and LVT flooring ourselves, we decided to hire out the shower remodel and wall demolition and it’s a good thing we did.

While the wall between the shower and tub was not structural, it did contain water pipes, plumbing ventilation and even electrical wiring. As a result, the contractors had to completely re-route the plumbing, electrical and ventilation (something entirely out of our comfort zone).

Here is what our shower looked like “before”…

By moving the plumping to the opposite wall, we were able to knock the divider wall down- opening up the sight lines of the room.

While the shower install and wall-demo was a pretty large investment  , in the end, it was totally worth it. The shower now appears way larger and brighter.

Luckily we invested minimally into the bathtub by painting the tub white and adding the DIY skirt, so at least we saved there.

It’s amazing how removing the corner bench of the original shower configuration and opening up the wall had such a huge impact.

While we couldn’t extend the shower lengthwise because of the tub, we were able to extend the width of the shower slightly. And going from an acrylic shower liner to subway tiles also allowed for some additional space (acrylic liners are about 2 -3 inches deep).

And I am totally obsessed with the way the black matte hardware pops against all of  the contrasting white.

As with the majority of our home, the walls here are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace.

I love how the wood on our new vanity provides warmth and texture to an otherwise stark design scheme.  And can you believe that the flooring is actually click- and- lock luxury vinyl plank? We were able to install the new flooring directly over the existing tile floor like we also did in the kitchen (here is that tutorial) .

While my master bathroom may still be small, every inch of it packs a major punch.

Since the bathroom remodel, I have even rediscovered my love for Epsom salt baths and essential oil aromatherapy.

While this project was five years in the making, the wait was totally worth it. It truly feels like I am living in a completely new home now.

  1. I looooove it! The window and the shower glass were great choices to spend the money on while remaining budget friendly with the same tub and footprint. Transformed the space without totally redoing the space from scratch. Win!
Can you tell me the source for the white shower niche insert? It appears to be a single piece which looks way more doable for our own upcoming bathroom reno than a custom niche with lots of tile cuts involved.

    1. Thank you so much, Julie! Now that the wall is down, the space feels so much bigger that I rest happy in my decision of keeping the original footprint. And you are correct…I went with a recessed shower caddy piece. The brand is “onyx collection”. I hope this helps!

  2. WOW Erica!!!! It turned out so freaking good and I couldn’t be happier for you sweet friend. We have almost the exact same shower/tub situation going on in our master bath and eventually planned on doing the same thing with the wall separating the shower and tub so the fact that you already went through it successfully makes me feel much more at ease. Enjoy those baths girl, the space is gorgeous.
