Looking for aspirational decorating ideas to get your outdoor space styled in time for summer entertaining? Today, I am sharing 10 chic ways to elevate your porch or patio regardless of the seasons…
Before moving to my lake cottage, I always considered summer a bit overrated.
With the oppressive heat and humidity of the deep south and no shaded reprieve from it, back at my 1980’s fixer upper, summertime was more about survival than thrival.
But now that I finally have a covered outdoor area at my new abode, I am much more about summer porchin’ – rain or shine.
And while you won’t find me serving up a pitcher of sweet tea (I prefer stiff margaritas myself), I love to make my guests feel welcomed with the ambiance I provide through a mixture of the senses- thoughtful styling, uplifting music, and good a$$ vibes via the energy I try my best to radiate.
Through the examples listed below, today, I would like to elaborate more on the visual aspects of cozy yet elevated porch styling- no matter the season…
1. Layered rugs and fireplace for year-round coziness –
If you are in the process of building a home, I strongly urge you to consider a fireplace for your back patio area. In fact, this fireplace is actually one of my favorite features of our screened-in-porch. Not only is it the focal point of the room, it’s functional as it lures my entire family outside even on the dreariest winter days.
Amping up the cozy factor, I decided to add some additional texture and warmth by layering a smaller graphic rug on top of a woven jute rug.
Tip: If you want to give your casual outdoor space a more elevated feel, consider symmetry with your furniture, decor pieces or plants.
2. Rusticity to ground sleek, modern pieces-
While all-white furniture could easily read as cold and sterile, this impeccable deck styled by For the Home proves otherwise. Breaking up the monotony of all the white tones, a rustic wooden coffee table is the perfect pop of warmth and texture to ground the space.
I love how ferns were used here as wall art of sorts- further injecting a variation of color into the design.
3. Bohemian character with stenciled tile floors-
What can I say? There is just such an enchanting allure to whimsical touches in an outdoor environment.
With its string lights, living wall art, and snug textiles, Zevy Joy’s boho porch encapsulates numerous magical moments. However, it’s the Moroccan-inspired flooring that truly distinguishes this space from all the rest. Can you believe she painted these “tiles” using porch paint and stencils?
4. Conversation areas for small budgets-
Wanting to give my front porch a welcoming vibe on a budget, I knew that a conversation set would be much more budget-friendly than an outdoor sectional or sofa.
Tip: Work with what you’ve got! Create your own conversation set by grouping two accent chairs with a small side table like I did here. No need to buy entirely new furniture!
5. Potted plants as decor-
If you don’t have the space or budget for new outdoor furniture, don’t neglect your porch entirely!
Instead, take a cue from Light and Dwell and adorn your entryway with potted plants in various sizes. I am obsessed with how the white pots pop against the black exterior (high-contrast decorating at its finest).
6. Statement lighting for an elevated feel-
Looking for an instant way to elevate your home’s exterior? Add a statement-making ceiling light to your covered porch like designer Amy Storm did here is this breathtaking design.
7. Festive ambience with a variety of glow-
If a romantic or intimate ambiance is what you crave, don’t rely strictly on traditional overhead lighting for your illumination. With string lights and candles galore, I love how Jenna Sue Design went the extra mile to make this patio space feel special. The only thing that could make this patio space more magical is fireflies.
8. A porch swing with contemporary style-
This fabulous porch by Triple Sec Farmhouse just goes to show that porch swings aren’t exclusively reserved for old-timers. With modern lines and graphic textiles, you get to have the welcoming feel of a farmhouse without the hillbilly aesthetics- the best of both worlds really.
9. Neutral yet visually interesting-
If you can’t already tell, I have a thing for bold, graphic patterns in outdoor spaces. But …if the high-contrast look doesn’t appeal to you, this soft and layered porch by Kristina Evans is a great example of how subtle can still be captivating.
Layering in texture with concrete pots, greenery, linen, and neutral tones is a great way to add depth to your outdoor space without distracting from the surrounding beauty. Notice how the gray in the rug pulls from the concrete planters- solidifying a cohesive palette.
10. Playful accents for a fun time-
If you are the fun-loving type, feel free to infuse some playfulness into your back deck with carefully chosen pops of color and personality. Crafting a fabulous chill zone for entertaining guests, Inspired Reality artfully combines chic and fun elements, featuring a colorful accent pillow and flowers alongside more sophisticated furnishings.
I hope these tips and imagery have you charged and ready to beautify your outdoor spaces.
