Cozy Winter Home Decor Ideas for Post-Holiday Spaces

Cozy Winter Home Decor Ideas for Post-Holiday Spaces

Struggling to find the “cozy” in your home now that the Christmas tree and garland are packed away? Today, I am sharing some chic and simple winter home decor ideas to help your space feel warm and inviting long after the holidays have passed…

Through the haze of a highly disorienting Nyquil hangover (tis the season I suppose), I am happy to report that I finally got around to taking down all of my Christmas decor this weekend.

And while part of my procrastination this year is definitely a bit pro-longed and uncharacteristic of me, there is actually something I have always dreaded about taking down all of the holiday magic: the Post-Christmas blues.

After becoming accustomed to warm, twinkling lights and the added fullness of a Christmas tree/trees for over a month, the moment it all goes away, my surroundings always feel a bit bare and depressing.

If you too can relate to my post-holiday home blues, you have come to the right place! Today, I am going to share some simple ideas for creating a cozy and inviting space all winter long…

1. Winter Vase Fillers-

While evergreen sprigs are still totally an acceptable way to fill your vase this time of year, if you are just over the holiday vibes altogether, you do have other options.

Here in my kitchen, I actually decided to get back into my faux fall foliage stash and fill my kitchen vase with these dried Cimicifuga Plant leaves. In my opinion, these work just as well for the winter months because of their deep, moody hue.

Other great options for winter vase fillers are twigs, dried berry branches, pampas plumes and even blossom stems. Tip: If you are opting for less color, the willow branch will provide a dramatic sculptural element while remaining season-appropriate.

2. Luxurious Fabrics-

Winter is the perfect time to indulge your senses with all things cozy and luxurious. Just as the materials in your wardrobe becomes fuller and more substantial, so should your pillows and throw blankets.

Plush velvet cushions, thick fur throws, and soft woolen textiles add both warmth and depth to a space. These rich fabrics not only create visual dimension but also envelop you in a sense of comfort and coziness- turning your home into a sanctuary for the colder months.

3. Seasonal Artwork-

When done tastefully, seasonal decorating is all about taking cues from mother nature.

What better way to bring the outdoors inside than with a winter-themed landscape? Even if you don’t have the budget for traditional, winter-inspired artwork, for just a few bucks on Etsy, you can buy beautiful digital art to update your television screensaver like House Seven Design did here in this gorgeous living room.

4. Hygge-

Beyond the television, what other cozy activities can you incorporate into a space to make you want to linger longer once the Christmas tree is gone? Perhaps a designated reading nook or a board game zone?

When I first stumbled upon this fabulous space by Urbanology Designs, my eye was drawn to the sassy little fur pillow. But as I studied the image further, I found myself falling more for the character and coziness of the space—especially the lived-in styling (notice the casually stacked books and the Dominoes on display). Whether you are an avid reader or an album collector, be on the lookout for unique opportunities to make a room feel more celebratory(holidays or not).

5. Illumination-

There’s nothing like the absence of a once glowing Christmas tree to inform you of the dark corners in your home that need illumination . To replicate the soft glow of your Christmas lights, consider an alternate source of lighting besides what is overhead (like a floor lamp). Remember…a room should have multiple sources of light!

6. Rugs-

Not only a means of literal warmth underfoot, rugs are a key factor in the visual warmth of a space. If your space is feeling cold or sterile, you may want to re-asses your rug situation. To add maximum coziness to a room consider wool, shag, fur or even a layered look (like fur on top of sisal).
