10 Patio Furniture Layout Ideas Around a Pool (Stylish + Functional)
Wondering how to arrange patio furniture around a pool without it looking like a random mix of chairs scattered everywhere? These 10 poolside layout ideas are simple, stylish, and actually make your space feel intentional...
With itchy eyes, sneezing fits, and a thick layer of pollen covering basically every outdoor surface visible (through my watery, itchy eyes of course), it can only mean one freakin’ thing…
Summer is right around the corner, and it’s time to get my patio and pool presentable before the BBQs and pool days start rolling in.

Given my current poolside situation is a bit of an embarrassing sh*t show (thanks to a few storms that took out furniture I’ve had for nearly a decade), this post is just as much for me as it is for you.
So today, I’m getting into the summer spirit and sharing some poolside layout ideas and styling inspiration below. Even if you don’t have a pool, you can easily apply many of these ideas to a patio or deck.…
1. Above-Ground Pool Deck Layout for Small Spaces-
Alright… let’s go ahead and start with the least fancy of the roundup (but also one of the most realistic)…

Back at my previous home (my 1980s fixer-upper), we built a pool deck to make our above-ground pool look more like an inground one. And while it turned out beautifully, the small backyard forced the deck design to be super narrow. I could really only fit two loungers with a small table between them.
Instead of trying to squeeze everything around the perimeter, I placed the loungers along one side of the pool where there was just enough width, then created a separate seating area directly across from the pool with two chairs and a small table set against the fence.

This kept the main walkway around the pool open while still giving us a spot to lounge and a spot to sit (without everything feeling crammed together).
2. Pool Deck with Dining Zone (Made for Summer Grillin’)-

Since most of our summer entertaining is centered around grilling, I was willing to sacrifice a couple of extra loungers so I could fit a dining zone onto the deck.
I placed the dining table off to one side of the pool and anchored it with an outdoor rug (which helps define it as its own space rather than it just feeling like furniture floating on the deck). Then, I kept a couple of loungers along the perimeter so there was still a spot to sunbathe without overcrowding the area.
3. DIY Cabanas with Multipurpose Seating-

You would never guess this dreamy poolside oasis was DIY-ed, but Bless’er House has a knack for making the budget-friendly look magazine worthy.
What’s especially thoughtful about this kind of setup is the combination of the sectional sofas paired with a dining table so that you can lounge or you can dine- all in the shade (and privacy if you wish) of these fabulous DIY cabanas.
4. Chic and Layered Chill Zones-

Not only is this pool area by Alexis Austin gorgeous to stare at, whether you need to cool off in the pool, warm up by the fire, or nap after one too many margs, the layering of seating here ensures optimal entertaining around the pool (without looking piecemeal).
Tip: The key to pulling this look off is a restrained palette- keeping with the same (or very similar) color-way when selecting all of your outdoor furniture.
5. Classic Resort-Style Layout-

For a layout that will never go out of style, take a cue from Chris Loves Julia and arrange two pairs of pool loungers along the length of your pool, with an umbrella and side table between each pair. Then, add a separate seating area for guests who’d rather sit and chat than fully commit to sunbathing.
6. Elevated Conversation Zone –

Speaking of those who prefer to converse rather than fully commit to sunbathing, this classy pool layout by Cameron Design Group is perfect for that crowd (lord knows I’m a sun worshiper, so I personally need a lounger).
That said, before you purchase any patio furniture, take a minute to think about how you’ll actually use your space. Just because loungers are basically synonymous with poolside seating doesn’t mean you have to include them in your own setup.
7. In-Pool + Poolside Lounger Layout (Best of Both Worlds)-

If my pool had a built-in tanning ledge, I would 100% go for this stunning layout by Fourseasons Collective. With the oppressive summer heat here in the South, having the option to lounge in the water or stretch out poolside just makes sense.
In this setup, traditional loungers line the edge of the pool with one centered rectangular umbrella for shade, while in-water loungers sit just below on the ledge- giving you the best of both worlds. And the draped towels on each chaise? Such a simple detail, but it adds that extra layer of charm and makes the whole space feel styled rather than just thrown together.
8. Outdoor Living Room (Poolside)-

For a poolside space you can even use well into the cooler months, take a look at this eye candy from Fraiche Living. With two sofas, two arm chairs, and a fire table at the center, it’s basically a living room (but with fresh air and sunshine therapy).
9. Catty-Corner Loungers-

For tight poolside spaces, think outside the box like Ashley Martin Home and arrange your patio furniture at a slight angle (instead of straight on). While you may be short on space, that doesn’t mean you have to be short on style, and this outdoor oasis is the perfect example.
10. Daybeds instead of loungers-

If you’re a high roller and budget is of no concern, take some inspo from Making Highview Home and give your poolside seating a super chic, opulent feel- skipping the basic loungers entirely and opting for luxurious daybeds along the pool (which…sadly… is out of my budget).
Tip: Choosing rectangular umbrellas instead of traditional round ones not only helps maximize shade and comfort, but also works especially well if you have an uneven number of loungers (or, in this case, daybeds).
Whether your patio or your poolside setup needs a little refresh this spring, I hope you found some inspo you can use in your own home (because I’ve definitely got a few ideas I’ll be stealing for my own less-than-fancy pool situation).
