Slowly but surely, my midcentury modern lake cottage is beginning to feel like home. Today, I am sharing the reveal of my Boho Modern living room along with the shoppable links…
While the majority of the main living spaces in my new home come complete with tall, beamed ceilings and large windows overlooking the lake, the living room is a bit more intimate and cozy of a space.
At our previous house, the bright open living room, while beautiful to look at and photograph, always seemed to lack warmth for me. So this time around, I was concerned more with cultivating a warm, welcoming feeling for this space versus decorating it purely for aesthetics.
Essentially, I wanted to create a space that felt casual and welcoming (perfect for Netflixin’ and chillin’), while also being sure to inject items that reflected my somewhat minimalist boho style.
Lucky for me, this room already had character and warmth- with the original board and batten walls painted in a creamy white (Shoji White by Sherwin Williams).

Not only did I keep the paint color as is, but I purchased both the leather couch and the linen slipcovered sofa from the previous owners as the furniture from our fixer upper would have appeared undersized for this room.
I love how this minimalist oil painting I purchased for the space perfectly ties in the color palette of my existing pillows. Not to mention, it’s a nice nod to the organic modern aesthetic that I am totally digging right now.
While I probably could have gone with a larger coffee table in this room, I am just not ready to part ways with this unique rattan one that I had purchased at the old house.
Now..you are probably thinking to yourself– is she not going to paint the brick fireplace and that damn brass surround?
Short answer: not for now!
You see…the fireplace also opens to the kitchen wall (it’s a two sided fireplace), and I absolutely love the warmth and character that the aged brick adds to our kitchen. So…I feel like it would be odd to paint the brick here and not paint the other side of the fireplace (like…where would the paint stopping point be?).
Not only that, but I really like how the brick cozies up the room (like I said…I am going for less of a look and more of a feeling).
And while I did want all the warm and cozy vibes here, I felt compelled to juxtapose all of the warm elements with some metallic chrome and a pop of blue via pillows (there is something about living on the water that has rekindled my love for coastal design and the color blue).
While I have also tinkered with the idea of painting the original built-ins ( which house a record player and a plethora of my husband’s speakers and electronics)under our massive 85” television , I am currently experiencing a bit of design paralysis. If I were to eventually paint them, I am leaning towards some sort of black or greige hue.
To offset the masculinity of the dark leather sofa and wood cabinets, I incorporated this curved-back, Bouclé swivel chair in the corner of our L-shaped seating arrangement. While cream Bouclé does make me a llittle nervous with my slobs (I mean kids), so far so good!
Not to mention, I consciously went with a cheaper piece (I got the swivel chair on sale for $300), so that if it does get destroyed, I won’t be too devastated.
To further balance the masculine elements in the room, I added these flowy, linen-esque curtains that I found for cheap on Amazon here.
One of my favorite scores for this house so far has been this midcentury modern/boho fringe mirror. A few years ago, I couldn’t find one like it for a reasonable price, but I finally lucked out and found one for under $120 here.
While I eventually want to add a semi-flush mount light to the center of the ceiling, I am trying to find one that I truly love and that doesn’t cost an arm and a freakin’ leg (man…budgets are such a buzzkill).
But for now, I am pretty content with how this living room is coming together.

Simple, clean, and welcoming... I love it! I just had my little house resided in board and batten. I love how your new home carries the board and batten to the interior. I think I may do something similar as a feature wall in my entry way. Looking forward to future posts as you continue to put your personal stamp on things!
