My Honest Review of Honed Carrara Countertops (After Swearing I’d Never Do Marble Again)
Thinking about honed Carrara marble countertops? Today, I’m sharing my honest review of Daltile’s Carrara White natural stone and why I ultimately chose marble again (even after swearing I’d never put myself through that hell again)…
After spending the better part of nine months watching my original polished marble countertops slowly turn pink before my eyes (you know…the very same ones I had proudly revealed to you last September after saving up four years for them), it would have been perfectly reasonable for me to throw in the towel and run straight for the safety (and durability) of quartz.
And trust me…I nearly freakin’ did.

Because after enduring enough countertop-related trauma to last a lifetime and spending nine months advocating for myself with the fabricators and stone suppliers involved (you can read about all the countertop drama here), I was convinced I wanted something with zero risks the second time around.
Or so I thought…

If you’ve been following along on this journey with me for some time, you already know I have essentially designed my entire kitchen around the exposed brick fireplace that I refuse to paint white.
I was committed to a moody European look with an almost impossible-to-pinpoint quality in terms of time or age….
I wanted guests to walk into the room and genuinely wonder if these countertops had been here all along- the last thing I wanted was for the kitchen to feel like a fresh remodel or scream some specific design trend that would feel dated in five years.

And while many people understandably thought I had completely lost my mind for choosing marble again, the more quartz samples I brought home, the more I realized something just wasn’t sitting right with me.
In fact… quite ironically, the thought of quartz gave me more anxiety than marble ever did as I was terrified that something too bright, too perfect, or too obviously “new” would completely throw off the soul of the kitchen I had spent years slowly creating.

And so…despite feeling completely effing looney tunes (and proving once and for all that I am, in fact, a glutton for punishment), I ultimately chose this beautiful double-sided Carrara White slab from the Daltile showroom in Nashville.
Unlike my previous Brazilian marble (which unfortunately wasn’t “hone-able”), this Carrara slab, straight from Italy, offered both a polished and honed finish. So…if anything good came from my countertop saga, I would say I finally got the honed finish I had secretly wanted all along.
My First Impression of Honed Carrara Marble…

I’ll be honest…
When the countertops were first installed, I actually had a slight bit of buyer’s remorse.
You see…after living with polished marble for nine months, I had become accustomed to all the sparkle and crystal clusters in my original Blanco Cachoeiro slab. The polished surface reflected light beautifully, and the dramatic movement gave the stone an almost jewelry-like quality.
By comparison, this Carrara initially felt…well…a little dark and flat.

But over the next several weeks, something funny happened…
Instead of mourning what I had lost, I began appreciating what this marble brought to the room.
And most importantly, I stopped stressing.
My Three Month Review of Carrara White Marble :

While I will say that this honed stone is waaay thirstier than my polished Brazilian marble ever was (as in…etches essentially happen instantly with honed whereas I had a little time to intervene with the polished surface), thanks to the busier pattern of Carrara and the flat finish, those etches are barely noticeable.

As a result, I no longer feel like I have to baby my countertops. And I certainly don’t have a mini panic attack every time a guest leaves a margarita glass out or my kids decide to conduct a science experiment involving vinegar on them (true story, ya’ll).

So while the honed Carrara definitely etches easier (and although I haven’t experienced any staining yet, I already have plenty of etches all over the place), one thing I have been pleasantly surprised by is how much stronger this particular stone seems to be compared to my Blanco Cachoeiro marble.
Within just a few weeks of installing my previous countertops, I had already accumulated multiple chips around the sink and dishwasher area. But with this Carrara, I have yet to chip it at all (although I probably just jinxed myself by typing that sentence).

And while I will always have a soft spot for the sparkle, crystal clusters, and glamour of my original polished Brazilian marble, once I decided to move on with my life, I began to appreciate what this quieter Carrara brought to the room.
Between the Natural Cream cabinetry, the exposed brick fireplace, the unlacquered brass accents, and the black island, this particular stone really did complete the moody, European, aged feel I had been chasing all along.

I didn’t want a kitchen that screamed “2026 remodel.” I wanted one that felt collected… timeless… like it had evolved slowly over decades.
And despite all the marble trauma I’ve endured over the last year (first-world problems… I know), I can honestly say that I have zero regrets about choosing it again…although ask me again in six months.

Maybe the moral of the story is that sometimes your instincts know what they’re doing long before your brain does. So trust your design gut and follow your heart…even if those around you are convinced you’ve officially lost your mind.
Because while it may not always seem true, I really do believe we get to have the desires God puts in our hearts. Even if obtaining those desires occasionally involves countertop-related trauma, plenty of “see, this is why I can’t have nice things” moments, and having to advocate for what you know deep down you deserve.

Thank you so much for stopping by and spending some time with me this week!
