Easy Faux Hedge Wall DIY

Looking for an easy, economical way to beautify an outdoor eyesore (think vinyl siding or chain link fence)? In today’s post, I am sharing a simple solution with this faux hedge wall tutorial…

If you were around last week for my Summer Home Tour, you might recall me mentioning how my wooded, backyard oasis is one of my favorite things about my 1980’s fixer upper.

In fact, I am so spoiled with all of the privacy, that it has made our current house- hunt feel damn near impossible. A private lot is actually one of our non-negotiables for our next home as well.

And while there are so many aspects of my backyard that bring me joy and serenity, there was an eyesore driving me effing bonkers…

A nasty stretch of bare, vinyl siding glaring its unattractiveness at me.

While my husband and I have seriously considered investing the $40,000+ to redo our home’s exterior, given we recently decided that this little rancher is not our forever home, ROI has started to dictate the majority of our design decisions.

With this in mind, we are not so sure we would get a full return on investment with new siding (and we are still pretty salty about our whole pool replacement fiasco).

Nonetheless, being a buyer in this crazy a$$ market has become incredibly discouraging…

With inventory at an alltime low and home values that make my eyes roll into the back of my skull, who knows just how long we may be here?!

But while we are here, I simply refuse to stare at ugly, vinyl siding while trying to get my zen on!

Then….while attending a party recently, I was inspired.

At the fabulous little soiree i attended, there was a “selfie station” with a backdrop made of faux greenery.

I thought that the idea would translate well onto my vinyl eyesore and also provide a playful, festive touch at our summer pool parties.

After googling UV, weather resistant faux boxwood products and reading plenty of reviews, I decided to give these faux boxwood tiles a try. (Click here for the faux hedge tiles I used)

While I had only seen people using them for photo backdrops or for covering chain link fences (the tiles come with zipties you can attach to the fence), I didn’t see why I couldn’t simply attach them to the back of my house (like one big piece of art).

How To Make a Faux Hedge Wall for Your Backyard:

Step 1). Determine the size of your hedge wall. I actually needed two boxes of these boxwood tiles to make the scale of the wall substantial enough for my liking.

Step 2). Once you’ve determined how many tiles wide and long, begin simply clicking them together using the snap mechanism included on the perimeters of each individual tile.

Step 3). Above is a progress photo of how they click together. Ultimately, I ended up using 4 20×20 tiles for the width and 5 20×20 tiles for the height. (So 9 tiles total).

Step 4). Once you have clicked together your desired composition, using a screw driver and screws, my husband mounted the entire piece to the siding. To minimize damage to the siding, he only used 3 screws: one at the left top corner, one at the center top, and one at the top right corner.

Step 5). To add a little more interest and pizazz, I then purchased this neon Relax sign. (Click here for the exact sign I used). There are two small mounting holes on the sign, so we simply used a screw driver and screws to mount the sign on top of the boxwood wall. We then used an extension cord to access the nearest electrical box.

Note: It is important to note that the specs on the sign say ok only for covered outdoor areas. While our sign is somewhat protected by the pitch of the gutters, I don’t know if this baby could withstand a bad storm. Luckily, it has withstood the elements so far (and we just had a pretty gnarly storm a few nights ago).

While it may not be as transformative as new hardie board siding, for less than an hour of labor and significantly less than the cost of new siding, I am pretty darn happy with how this project turned out.

Not only did it cover a nasty eye sore, this decorative element also added a focal point and a bit of playful character to an otherwise boring space.
