Easy Statement Choker Necklace DIY

Easy Statement Choker Necklace DIY

I am such a sucker for a good statement necklace and for the past year or so, I have totally been taking advantage of the fact that one of my favorite nineties trends, chokers, have made a major comeback.

Statement chokers are such a great way to add interest and boho flair to an otherwise boring outfit. Problem is that I have a hard time finding them. What I have discovered is that there is a fine line between beautifully dramatic and feeling like you are being swallowed whole by your necklace. That is why I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own boho choker. And you know me…I am the queen of easy DIY’s, so this requires basically no skill what-so-freaking-ever.

It is no secret I am pretty obsessed with all things “boho” and that includes bohemian fashion. Unfortunately with my fuller figure, the flowy and whimsical silhouettes often associated with boho fashion typically translate into frumpy and “potato sack-esque” on my body. It’s kind of cruel that I bust my ass in the gym for such a mediocre physique, but thankfully I have an arsenal of various black dresses to somewhat off-set the problem( there is no way in hell I am giving up my wine or my daily dose of chocolate…that would be dangerous to my sanity and my family). In an effort to add a little more allure to my basic garments, I love playing with bold jewelry.

So enough of my tangent! Here is how I made my statement choker.

Materials:

Step 1– First determine how you want your choker to fit, and cut the ribbon accordingly (I determined length by actually testing the fit around my neck). Then, cut your trim so that it is centered with the length of the ribbon.

Step 2 – Now, hot glue the trim to the ribbon (be sure trim is centered on ribbon). I decided to also taper the outer two pieces of fringe by cutting them shorter than the center pieces.

Step 3 – (optional). With a small, stiff paintbrush apply the acrylic paint to the knotted areas of the fringe and also at the very bottoms of the fringe pieces. Let dry completely and be sure to turn over and complete on other side.

Step 4– Once paint is dry and you are ready to wear, simply place the necklace around your neck and tie a knot in the back to secure.

And there you have it…a sexy, boho choker dramatic enough to be a statement without making you feel like a weirdo wearing costume jewelry. Not to mention, it is super comfortable. Such a great way to spruce up a dull outfit (such as the dozens of black maxi-dresses that I own).

And for those of you who don’t dig fashion…don’t freak out. I will be back with plenty more home improvement and interior design posts, but sometimes a girl just has to change things up a bit. Just hold tight!

Now get out there and design some good vibes. Please share the love and Pin!
