Kitchen In Progress

Kitchen In Progress

diy kitchen remodel

Although the kitchen has come a long way, it is still a room in progress. I had so many great plans for the space, but a nagging little pain called a budget has somewhat slowed some of my momentum.  To appreciate it’s transformation, lets view a picture of it taken the day we moved in.

The warmth of the cabinets mixed with that of the walls is overkill. Got to love the ivy stenciling adorning the doorway.

We painted the kitchen cabinets and trim in a ultra white high-gloss, oil-based paint. To break up the white, we went with a medium gray paint for the island, bar and hood vent. We replaced the oven unit and whitewashed the brick surround. As with the other living areas, the walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Passive. We recently built pantry doors to resemble a barn door vibe. You can view that tutorial here.

As you can see, the stove-top cooking range needs to be replaced and although the countertops are quartz, they are not the color I would have preferred. One day we will make it happen.

I like how the pops of turquoise and green really bring the otherwise washed out space to life.

To add height to the room, we took the cabinets all the way to the ceiling. I will give a detailed tutorial of this eventually.

open concept kitchen

It’s hard to find open concept designs in older homes. Our kitchen opens right up to the living room. This layout was a major selling point and it is so nice when entertaining or keeping track of my little wild man.

One day, I would love to demo the tile flooring and continue the hardwood flooring from the living room and dining room into the kitchen. For now, I can keep looking at the “before” photos and be thankful for how far the room as come.

Here is another before photo.

And here is what some white and gray paint and subway tile backsplash can do.

Here is a “before” of the bar area. My husband wanted to remove the bar completely, but the area has proven very useful when we have pool parties. I like to lay my serving dishes on it for guests.

We replaced the light fixture, painted the bar in a medium gray and replaced those nasty countertops with butcher block.

Hi, I was wondering what paint you used for the cabinets? Also the counter on the Bar? did you just buy a butcher block counter? or is this something you made as well? PS LOVE the barn doors in the pantry!

Hi Kathy, I used a Sherwin Williams oil-based gloss paint on the cabinets in white. We purchased the butcher block from Lumber Liquidators at cut it to fit the bar. Hope this helps!

Stunning. Love the pantry doors. I don't know WHAT people were thinking when they installed your former backsplash. I have seen that very backsplash in so many homes and it makes me want to cry. The subway tiles are so fresh.

Thank you so much, Jenn. Yes, there have been lots of questionable choices from the previous owners haha.
