Indigo Abstract Art DIY

Indigo Abstract Art DIY

So I know it’s October and I should be gracing you with fall inspiration posts and Halloween crafts, but I have to keep it real….

  1. Ya’ll know I am not much of a “crafter”.
  2. It is still hot as Hades here in the dirty south, and  I am just not feeling the fall spirit.

Not to be completely useless though, I do have an easy little DIY for you today.

It seems anytime I go shopping for a specific item of decor,  I can never find it. This is when I like to take matters into my own hands.

Because I am a serial re-decorator, I was beginning to crave change in my dining room. It just wasn’t feeling fresh to me.

Inspired by much of the artwork used by one of my favorite interior design firms,  Blackband Design, I decided I had to incorporate some sort of indigo abstract art into the room. I craved a colorful, sexy statement piece. Something a little unpredictable.

Unable to find anything within my meager budget, I decided to make use of some blank canvas I had purchased from Hobby Lobby on sale.

Materials:

  • 2   18×24 canvas
  • cobalt blue acrylic paint
  • a lighter blue paint (if you want more dimension)
  • white acrylic paint
  • paint brush

First, I used my cobalt blue paint to plot a general composition. I mainly used vertical strokes.

Then for a little more dimension, I applied my lighter blue in a very thick layer.

Still not satisfied with the composition, I decided to apply white acrylic paint over areas of the blue . And by “apply”, I mean  I caked that sh*t on. Seriously though.

Once I felt the painting was complete, I had my sweet husband frame the canvas in using lattice. I got the idea from my brilliant blogging buddy Laura over at the Turquoise Home.  To read her full tutorial , click here.

While I am sure I will eventually find something to replace my little masterpiece, it works fine for now.

Even better, the entire project cost me less than $30.

And please do forgive me. … I know I  suck at life right now and am completely failing you by not blowing your mind with autumnal crafts and tablescapes.  I warned you….I am no Martha Stewart. Just a mother and marketing professional desperately trying to keep her head above water.

Much love to you all! Now get out there and design some good vibes.

Beautiful Erica. And it offsets the clock perfectly adding dimension to the overall look. I know what you mean about not feeling fall. I didn't start to feel it till about the beginning of October and we still have hot days here in Greece. Kinda saps the fall inspiration out of you.

Thank you so much, Mary. Yes, it is hard to get into the fall spirit when it still feels like summer outside. I really hope I get the chance to visit Greece one day. Much Love!!!

Erica! Your DIY abstracts looks grand! Oh this makes me want to do a few too. I already have a few canvases that were originally covered in printed upholstery fabrics for a wall decor. This was a few years ago as in ten probably. I just need to decide what paint color and go for it. I like the lattice idea too...using. Thanks for the tip. Love your pops of color! Hang in there with those boys. They grow up way too fast.
