DIY: Oversized Wall Art for $50

DIY: Oversized Wall Art for $50

Sharing is caring!

There is nothing like oversized, canvas art to make your home look refined and cultured.

While I often say the bigger the better (mainly referring to my hair, jewelry or decor-not my gut), the larger the art…the larger the price tag. But with a little inspiration from House of Jade Interiors, I was able to make this large, Indigo art for $50.

Materials Needed:

Step 1:

Cut wood strips to desired height and width. I needed my art to be a very specific dimension as it was going over a console table in my dining room. Not only did I have to consider the width of my console table, but I also had to contend with chair railing. To insure an aesthetically pleasing result, I went with 45” x 48”.

To ensure accurate dimensions: If horizontal piece of wood is on top at the 90 degree joint,  deduct 1.5” from vertical wood strip due to the .75” thickness of horizontal wood strips.

Step 2:

Build outside frame work with wood strips.Drill pilot holes at joints to ensure wood does not split once screw is started. Then, add in horizontal supports as pictured below, also drilling pilot holes.

Step 3:

Lay 51″ x 60″ wall tapestry out on flat surface (face down). Make sure your frame is centered on wall tapestry (or shower curtain).

Step 4:

Fold opposing edges over frame work and begin stapling the fabric. Be sure to stretch fabric as tight as possible to avoid wrinkles. Repeat for all sides.

Note: I have lots of slack because I used a shower curtain, but it would have been easier and cheaper if I would have simply used a wall tapestry, which you can buy here.

Now flip your canvas over and make sure everything is secure, and stapled tight.

I am so happy with how it turned out. And because I am always switching out my art work, I fully intend on doing this with other designs. Society6 has thousands of wall tapestries and shower curtains to select from.

Now get out there and design some good vibes!

Be sure to spread the love and pin….

Great idea, Erica. Until I read the post, I thought you made the canvas via shobori and was like...Whoa....girl got major dying skills. I was kind of relieved that it was a fabric you purchased because now I can copy your idea with confidence. Thanks for sharing. It's a great project. Susie from The Chelsea Project
