DIY Marbleized Indigo Eggs – Lessons Learned

DIY Marbleized Indigo Eggs – Lessons Learned

Sharing is caring!

I am still hanging in there , friends. Although it feels like the baby could pop out at any minute, given the pressure I feel on my bladder, nothing has happened yet and I actually had the chance to do a fun little DIY easter egg tutorial.

And no….I cannot claim to be the originator of this awesome idea as I actually found this DIY Marbelized Indigo Easter Egg tutorial from Alice and Lois. You can check out their tutorial here .

My take on their tutorial was initially a fail, so I wanted to share tips I learned along the way.

Materials Used:

  • Cheap, Blue Nail Polish
  • Hard-Boiled Eggs
  • Latex Gloves
  • Disposable bowl
  • Water
  • Something to dry eggs on (I used the cardboard that came with an easter egg dye kit)

I bought three different shades of cheap, blue nail polish, but I found the dark blue to look the best….I think the darker the nail polish, the better the “marble” effect can be seen. When I used the lighter colors, the eggs sort of just looked “spackled”..not marbleized.

The tutorial says to fill a bowl 3/4 of the way full with room temperature water as the nail polish will sink if the water is too cold.

So, I filled the bowl 3/4 of the way full with luke warm water. It then says to swirl the nail polish with a mixing stick so that there is a marble effect created with the water and the nail polish. For me, this is where everything went awry.

I am not sure if it is because I used super cheap polish (or maybe I am simply an idiot with a major case of pregnancy brain)…but the nail polish really would not “swirl” when I used the mixing stick.Instead,  when I stirred, it broke down into beady little clumps and then sunk. ..the more I stirred…the more the polish clumped and sunk. Can someone say #fail ?

After several failed attempts, not to mention lots of wasted nail polish, I decided to pour the nail polish in the water, and then “swirl” the egg directly  in the nail polish (immediately, so it didnt have time to clump or sink). And bam! It worked!

As soon as you pour a decent amount of polish in, swirl egg in the polish and work fast before the polish sinks and cakes to the bottom of the bowl. Repeat for each egg!

When you are done “swirling” and “marbleizing” and twerking (that just sounded like the next logical verb in my series), be sure to let the eggs dry for about 3-4 hours.

Because I am so creative, I decided to use the cardboard that came with my son’s easter egg dye kit. How innovative of me…right?

And while my version did not turn out as amazing as Alice and Lois’s did, I think they are pretty cool.

In case you have not noticed, anything Indigo and marbleized is so “in” right now.  Not to mention, I love how these eggs add a festive element of Easter to my home decor without being too cutesy or cheesy. Ya’ll know I am not big on the cutesy factor.

Wishing you all a happy Easter!!!  It is time for me to get back to being a lazy, worthless slob. That is pretty much the only way to go thru the last few weeks of pregnancy and given this is my second child, I now know to enjoy what rest I can get before the baby comes and I am transformed into a sleepless, emotional zombie.

Now get out there and design some good vibes!

I didn't realize you can use nail polish! I've always shied away from dying eggs because I thought it was too complicated. Despite your 'fail', I'm inspired to give this a go! Thanks for sharing! xx Neelam http://patternsandprosecco.com/2016/03/easter-decor/

P.S. I hope baby comes soon!
